A balancing act

Thanks for all of your comments, messages and e-mails on my last post.  We’re all in this together so let’s keep going!

This past weekend was a long weekend in Canada and we headed up to a friend’s cottage!

Lemon’s like “cottage weeeeeeeee”

I’ve always had a hard time staying on track at cottages. It feels like vacation, and vacations usually come with indulgence. I made a note to stay on track this weekend, with a few (planned) exceptions. I packed a giant cooler full of clean food to make it easier.

I had my cheat meal on Saturday night since we went to a BBQ/party at another cottage. I got to eat a burger and an ICE CREAM SUNDAE! I actually met a reader at the party too (how random is that?), HI KAIT! and HI PENNY! (Kait’s freaking cute Basset Hound).

I had a few drinks Saturday and Sunday nights as well, but I stayed on track with my meals for the rest of the weekend. While everyone else was eating cheese sausages out the wazoo, I was eating things like this:

Chicken breast, guacamole and Frank’s red hot on Ezekiel bread with cucumbers for dayyyyys.

I even turned down this!

Okay I had ONE bite of Josh’s. Good thing cheesecake isn’t really my thing.

We also managed to round up a little group run for Saturday morning! Four of us went for a run and the rest went for a walk. I was a happy camper.

I managed to pump out 10 (slowwww) kilometres on the hills and in the sun. It was the day after leg day. YA FEEL ME?

Overall, I was really happy with how I did. Often I go to the cottage with the best of intentions, and I come home looking 7 months pregnant. Instead, this year, I felt just as good on the last day as I did on the first. Balance is the way to do it.

If you are wondering about Lemon (which I know you are), she had the most fun, doing things like this:

And this:

And this:

Hedgehog stare down.

And this:

Loungin’ at the party like a little human.

We had so much fun that we are going back tomorrow night to do it all over again for another 3 days! Let’s hope I can keep it together once again!

How do you keep balance when you go away for the weekend?

  1. hey! i’m in canada too (toronto). what part are you from?

when i go away on vacation, i don’t even bother packing my workout gear but to balance it out, i always eat healthy (or select the healthiest option there). makes me feel less guilty.

  2. Good for you for making healthy choices at the cottage, I always find that so challenging. I try to make healthy choices with snacks and drink lots of water (no pop or beer because they make me bloated), and then I just watch my portions of bad foods. I’ll have a burger but I will have it with a salad and maybe only 5 chips instead of filling my plate with them like I used to. 🙂

  3. HAHA- I don’t know what made me burst out laughing more: Lemon’s car face or yours running. It’s basically the same level of extreme happiness.

    • Danielle says:

HAHAH! Are you implying that I’m one of those people who looks like their dog?

      …not even mad.

  4. Omg no- but you couldn’t tell who was the happier party here!
    “…not even mad”. Dying. Dead.

  5. Was Josh holding the hedgehog? Boy, his arms must be tired. BAHAHA.

  6. Kait Lucas says:

Ah just saw this post! Obviously I read newest to oldest 😉 aha. Penny says Hi! Soooo cool I’m in your post, it made me smile 🙂 Love the way you plan ahead and stay healthy at the cottage, very inspiring, I’m definitely going to start doing this!

    • Danielle says:

Haha weee! Hi Penny! BTW, I am going to fix the spelling of your name STAT.

It definitely helps to come prepared so when you’re hungry you can eat ASAP, before the cheese sausages magically appear on your plate hahah
