Free Food! (AMRAP Bars Review & Giveaway!)

Hi hi hi!

I had a wonderful weekend celebrating my friend Brandy’s birthday in Toronto where we stayed at the SHANGRI-LA (no big deal). We spent all our money, ate all the food, and destroyed a dance floor. Mission(s) accomplished.

ANYWAY.

A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity through FitApproach to try and review some new flavours of AMRAP Bars that were recently released. Obviously I love to eat all the food, so I jumped at the chance!

I received a sample of each of the three new flavours: Fig Cacao, Cashew Vanilla, and Almond Honey. Let me tell you, they did NOT disappoint! The first bar I tried was the Fig Cacao, because I was pretty certain it would be my favourite. It was really good, but it turned out to be my least favourite! (Because the others were that good!) It was sweeter than I wanted it to be– well, just more fig and less cacao, and obviously I am in the market for maximum chocolate. The Cashew Vanilla was probably my favourite. It reminded me of a salted white chocolate chip macadamia nut cookie. YEAH. Yeah. The Almond Honey was ALMOST as tasty as the Cashew Vanilla, but it wasn’t quiiiittte on that level. But I still want to eat it all the time.

AMRAP bars are paleo friendly, gluten free, dairy free, GMO free, preservative free, and free of artificial sugars! If you couldn’t tell by the name, AMRAP bars (stands for As Many Reps/Rounds As Possible) were designed with crossfitters in mind, but they’re really good for any athlete!

These bars are very similar to Larabars in consistency and flavour, with a few things that separate them.

  • AMRAP bars are pretty enormous. Probably the the size of two Larabars. Sign me up.
  • AMRAP bars have a higher calorie count. They range from 270-320 calories per bar. While I wouldn’t quite call these a meal replacement, they are definitely going to lock down hunger for a couple hours (thanks to the healthy fats!)
  • AMRAP bars taste better. No one told me to say that! Larabars are very simple and have very few ingredients, and while I really appreciate that, sometimes it leaves something to be desired for your tastebuds. AMRAP bars manage to stay “clean” with short ingredient lists, but they taste really, really good and flavourful. Almost like they can’t be healthy for you!

What I didn’t like:

  • The protein levels are kinda weak, ranging from 12-15g per bar. But really, the fats kept me full so I didn’t mind; I don’t count macros!  Check our the full nutritional profiles here.
  • The packaging. I’m a sucker for pretty packaging, and the AMRAP bar package doesn’t do it for me. Would this ever be a deal breaker? No. But I just might not have noticed the product in the first place.
  • The price. $32 for a box of 8 bars just sounds crazy to me. I guess it doesn’t seem as bad when you consider the size of them,  but really 8 bars means 8 snacks to me (regardless of size) and $4 a bar is probably not in my budget.

Overall, I loved these bars. (I really did!)
