Lemon Update & An Impromptu Relay Race!

SOOO, I intended on posting yesterday but I ran into some unexpected issues…

When I got up yesterday I noticed that Lemon was sporting some more lovely hives on her head and legs.

This really wasn’t that bad compared to her previous reactions, so I wasn’t too concerned, I gave her a small dose of Benadryl and let her be.  A few hours later the hives were better (though not all gone) and I decided I wanted to get out of the house to work. I decided to head over to David’s Tea (since iced tea is only $1 all summer long because I bought this sweet tumbler!).

I worked for a few hours and then went next door to this cute pet shop. I felt bad for leaving Lemon but I was going STIR CRAZY. I figured a nice treat and she would forget all about it (yes I know I am totally irrational). I picked up these frozen sweet potato treats, perfect since it was 10000 degrees out.

When I walked in the door I was greeted by a very sad looking Lemon. This was her worst reaction yet. Her eyes were swollen all around, half her face was drooping because it had so many hives, and there was one on her head the size of a toonie (aka. $2 coin for you U.S. folks hah). The worst part was that in all her excitement to see me, she was coughing and gasping for air. Her throat was clearly swelling. I dropped my bags and ran to the kitchen and gave her MORE Benadryl, the largest dose I am allowed to give. They told me Benadryl is very safe for dogs and I need not worry about giving it to her when I am worried. The frozen treats also came in handy as I think it helped her digest the pill faster and helped to soothe her throat. She looked really mangy because every place there was a hive on her body made her hair raise up. She just looked so sad and sick! I felt so awful. By around 9:30pm everything was cleared up and she was back to normal. Before bed, I inspected her for more hives (as I am now completely paranoid) and sure enough, two more on her head. I wasn’t sure if these were left over from the previous reaction so I let her be for awhile. We went up to bed around midnight and Lemon chose to sleep on the floor in her own bed, which is weird for her. I laid awake for about 20 minute stressing until I couldn’t take it anymore and I got up to check on her. Sure enough, hives all over the back of her ears (this was new) and her head. I gave her more Benadryl and stayed awake for another hour or so just watching to make sure she wasn’t getting worse. I fell asleep on the couch and eventually woke up and Lemon and I headed back up to bed. No reactions today, thank goodness. I called the vet and they are going to give me a referral for an allergist. At this point, I really just want to know what is causing it so I can deal with it. I am so scared I will come home to an even worse reaction. ANYWAY, sorry for the long rant on that but that’s what’s going on here.

In less serious news, my sister and her fiancé invited Josh and I to participate in an impromptu beach front obstacle-relay race on Saturday! SO FUN! It is only 2.5km per person so that is good for the sake of my foot, but it will still definitely be a challenge! I have only run twice in the past 5 weeks, and both short, flat distances. The addition of some sandbags and car tires should definitely make for an interesting BEACH run! Hah, as if running in the sand isn’t hard enough. At least shoes are optional!

Our team! Winners already, as you can see.

Hope your weeks are wrapping up nicely 🙂

    good luck!

    xoxo from Trinidad

  2. I hope you find a good allergist. Poor sweet Lemon. I hate any time I’ve had an allergic reaction…..I hope you get some answers soon xoxo

and I’d love a relay where I only had to run 2.5km 😉 nice job!

haha oh 2.5km running in DEEP SAND with obstacles feels absolutely nothing like 2.5k on the road my friend— felt more like 10k running as hard as you can the entire time!

  3. Improptu race relay? Girl – you are my hero! Come to Toronto for a tea date soon?
